They love to be worn but they do not go well with chemicals like lotions and perfume. They are also sensitive for temperature changes and scratches from other gemstones and metal. Keep them safe and separated in a jewellerycase.
Soap, handlotion and dead skincells will take that lovely sparkle away from your gemstones. Luckily this is easily fixed with a little bit of warm water, a drop of dish soap and an old toothbrush. Get in under stones and around prongs and make your jewellery shiny. A soft polishing cloth is also recommended for that extra sparkle. Most gemstones are happy with this tender TLC but there are some that are even more delicate. If you have any uncertainties, I'll help you.
Let your goldsmith have a look at the prongs that hold the stones in place. Metal does wear over time but luckily it can be repaired. Remember - it's easier and cheeper to repair rather than replace a missing stone.
Or the garden, or while changing the tires on your car. And please don't hit your rings together while applauding. That will send chills down my spine and not the good ones.
There is a good reason why most engagement and wedding rings are made with diamonds. Most gemstones are not hard enough to be used in an everyday ring. If you think about it - rings are quite exposed to hitting things as we use our hands through out the day, opening doors and carrying things. If you love amethysts, who are a bit on the softer side, of course you could have it in an ring. I just wouldn't recommend it to be worn every day. You don't wear your high heeled strappy sandals going grocery shopping do you? It's the same with your jewellery.
